Norma was born and brought up in Edinburgh. As a child she attended St Andrew’s Church, Clermiston. During her school years, her Christian faith was nourished through Scripture Union and mission worship and she remembers, with great fondness, singing the old hymns and choruses. Later, she became a member of Holyrood Abbey Church under the evangelical leadership of Revd James Philip.
She studied catering at Edinburgh College of Domestic Science for three years before taking up her first post as Domestic Bursar in a university hall of residence, where she met her husband, Tim. Norma and Tim were married in 1970 and came to Amersham, where they have lived ever since. Norma worked for the Buckinghamshire School Meals Service and then managed the Refectory at Amersham College. In 1973, she gave up work to bring up their two children, Nicola and Adam. Nicola works for the UK Department of International Development and Adam has formed his own company, Mainframe, creating computer animation for television. Norma qualified as a teacher of ICT and Business Studies and taught at the Amersham School until 2000, when she moved to St Mary’s School, Gerrards Cross. She retired in 2006. She became a member of Amersham Free Church in 1988 under the ministry of Maurice Williams, taking an active part in the everyday life of the Church as an enthusiastic member of the choir and a keen flower arranger. Norma was an Elder for five years before becoming Church Secretary in 2009. |
