Janet was born in Brighton, and brought up in various parts of the country
as the family moved with her father's jobs. He was the son of a Church of
Scotland minister and had a strong influence on the Christian upbringing of
Janet and her three sisters. Janet was confirmed in the local parish
church when she was fourteen.
Four years at Teacher Training College in Nottingham and all the attractions that that offered meant that God and the church were pushed into the background. It was really through music that she was drawn back. As a member of the college orchestra, she played in one particular performance of 'The Messiah' in a Nottingham church and was particularly struck by the words and the strength of feeling that she experienced. On moving down to London to teach in a primary school in Hayes, Middlesex, she joined the Church of Scotland in Knightsbridge. (Her paternal grandmother had told her she would meet some 'nice boys' there!) Sure enough, after a year or two she met her future husband, Willie, who shared a common interest in tennis, badminton and Scottish country dancing. They moved out to Buckinghamshire, and 'commuted' to church for a while, but after two of their three children were born, decided that they needed to worship locally. Amersham Free Church felt immediately right, and they became members in 1986. They have three children in their twenties and late teens. |
